Energy & Resources: 101

The Tax Institute’s Energy and Resources 101 event comes at the optimum time for tax practitioners to refresh and update their Energy and Resources knowledge and tax technical skills.

In Perth on 2 April, The Tax Institute's WA State Chair Nick Heggart, CTA (Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills) and Professor Sam Spearing (Curtin University) present at the Energy & Resources 101.

They tell us a little about their sessions in this post.

A Director at Greenwoods & Herbert Smith Freehills, Nick has been affiliated with The Tax Institute for around 20 years. He originally became involved through attending seminars to upskill his presenting technique during the early stages of his career.

At Energy and Resources 101 he presents 'Income Tax – Core Principals’.
Nick says ‘delegates will leave my session with the relevant tools to be able to advise clients on the optimum approach in different situations. I will be presenting an overview of the income tax issues that arise when dealing with mining and petroleum tenements.’
There are a range of income tax issues that arise when dealing with
interests in mining titles, including asset sales, farm-ins, treatment of royalties, company acquisitions and sales, and renewals of mining tenements.
Nick's session will look at each, drawing on his experience with many clients in the energy & resources space to give delegates a good base level understanding of the key income tax issues to think about when buying or selling a mining or petroleum tenement, doing a farm-out or tenement swap.

Nick deals with many clients in the Energy & Resources space and hopes to give delegates a good base level understanding of the key income tax issues to think about when buying or selling a mining or petroleum tenement, doing a farm-out or tenement swap.

A regular presenter for the Institute, Nick says when he’s not knee deep in tax, enjoys sailing and snowboarding. He told us he is particularly looking forward to Oliver Mailes’s (Office of State Revenue) session at the event looking at Stamp Duty and Resources transactions.

Opening the event is Professor Sam Spearing (Curtin University). The Director of the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, Sam has an array of experience in the Mining, Geotechnical and Engineering space. He has published two books and traveled to over 70 countries throughout his career.

Sam presents the session 'Mining, Exploration & Petroleum Terminology – All you
wish you knew but were too afraid to ask'
Sam’s session will provide a practical overview of common terminology used in the resources industry. Sam says ‘delegates will walk away with a basic knowledge of the resources industry and the challenges and opportunities that may present themselves to somebody active in the energy and resources and related fields. I will also provide a brief understanding of how these natural resources are found, explored, exploited and processed for final use.’

Don’t miss out on this 101 event. It will be key in being able to confidently advise your clients on the tax issues faced by the energy & resources industry this calendar year.

Also presenting is Lisa Chatfield (Deloitte), Len Hertzman, CTA (Australian Taxation Office), Caroline Hickson, ATI (KPMG) and Nicola Youngson (KPMG).
